Operculum Shell Necklace and Bracelet Set
Wonderful
operculum shell necklace and bracelet set comes from the “operculm” or
“little lid” of the turbin snail found in the South Pacific. No longer legal to harvest, these shells were most widely used in jewelry in the Victorian era
and are also known by the name “Cat's Eye”. The shells, being natural, are each unique with a domed top and flat bottom that is set in a silver collet or bezel
setting. There are seven shells to
the 16 inch long necklace held together by links attached to their bezel cups so they lie flat and smooth against the skin. The bracelet is seven inches long with identical
links. Each shell is approximately
5/8” inches in diameter with the largest shell at the center of the necklace measuring 7/8” inches. The chain on the necklace is marked “1/10 12KT” or gold filled. The backs of the shells are unmarked. Both pieces are in very good condition with a bit of natural patena
on the chains and backs of the settings. Both
rare and wonderful, the shells are striking yet delicate with a beautifully balanced design made with great quality and care
that is now found only in finer jewelry.
