Necklaces - Cats Eye Shell Operculum and Tortoise Shell - SOLD!
An amazing and rare collector's piece from the early 20th Century is this cats eye shell
necklace set on hand carved oval tortoise shell discs. The style of this choker necklace is very attractive with it's
larger central pendant hanging from the smaller discs. The tortoise shell is carved out in the center to fit each operculum
cats eye into its own setting. The operculum are flaps that close off the shell of the living sea creature found in
the Pacific Ocean. They were a popular material used in jewelry from the Victorian era and continued to be used
into the early to mid 1900s. The discs are linked together by brass rings and hang from a brass chain with a safety
clasp. Given it's style and materials, this piece could be from the Art Deco period of the 1920s to 30s or possibly
as late as the 1940s. Six eyes are about 5/8" in diameter and the larger central drop has an eys of 3/4" in
diameter. The entire neclace is 14 1/2" long and is in very good condition.
